Chem Giants Accused on Toxic Waste in Brazil
By EMMALEE ABEL
INDIANAPOLIS (CN) - Five chemical giants have been sued over toxic chemicals left in Brazil for more than 30 years causing cancer and birth defects, says a class action in Federal Court naming
Eli Lilly,
Dow Chemical,
Shell Oil,
American Cyanamid,
and BASF Corp. as defendants.
The suit says their actions caused children to be born with deformities that made their gender unrecognizable.
Residents in and around
Sao Paulo,
Cosmopolis and Paulina
say the chemical companies shipped dangerous chemicals such as tebuthiuron to Brazil and disposed of them in ways that would be illegal in the United States.
Dozens of named plaintiffs say they and their children have suffered cancer, tumors, genetic abnormalities, physical deformities, mental derangement, sexual impotence, deformation of genitals, stillbirths and miscarriages.
The class is represented by Teeluck Persad of Orlando, Fla.
